Another question
What is the first news event you remember?
For example, when I was in kindergarten, I remember the Challenger Explosion. I also remember Baby Jessica trapped in the well, I'm not sure which happened first.

The Mount St. Helen's eruption of May 1980. I remember we were in our car on our way to my grandparents' place in New Brunswick, and I was in my carseat in the back... and there was talk about the volcanic activity on the radio.

I remember mention of the volcano (I knew what one was and what it meant) and that the event took place in the United States. I remember being worried that this could affect my grandparents. They lived right across from there! (Edmundston, NB is right across "the bridge" to Madawaska, ME! which, in my recently-turned-two-years-of-age brain meant "The United States" at the time.)

What is really cool is that I confirmed this is an actual memory and not one that others remembered (that was later fed to me and that I remember by proxy). I re-told it to my parents who confirmed the time and place and went "oh god, I can't believe you would remember that...!" ;)

My dad recalls that I insisted on an explanation of two things: a) a geography lesson because this whole "US" thing bothered me and b) a quick Volcanoes-and-You lesson , the toddler-friendly version, in a nutshell.

No, I wasn't exactly a normal kid, but you knew that already ;)

ok for real, my first memory was of my 4th bday getting a banana seat bike with a unicorn and rainbow on it. I also fished in the bath tub with my new fushing pole that day...

anyways, I understand that may not qualify as a "major news event" but I thought it was totally rad...

I remember jacob wetterling getting kidnapped. hurricane andrew. etc.

I'm going to go with the challenger explosion, though my brain isn't really organized chronologically. There may be earlier things that I have memories of but they aren't classified in my brain as earlier.

I remember telling really morbid jokes about the challenger explosion and I actually remember those jokes better than many I've heard since:

What does NASA stand for? Need Another Seven Astronauts!

What color were Christa McAuliffe's eyes? Blue - one blew this way and one blew that way.

How do they know the Challenger crew had dandruff? The found head and shoulders all over the beach!

Probably the 1984 election. We had a mock election at our school, and I remember voting for Reagan because I liked his last name better than Mondale.

(I was 6, what the hell did I know?)

That is really funny, because in 2nd grade we had a mock election. Every single kid in my class voted for Bush Sr. except me. (Probably because I lived in a hillbilly town and they heard their hick parents talking about gun control, etc..) The teacher asked me (kind of harshly) 'Why did you vote for Dukakis?!' and I said, 'Because I like the name Dukakis.'
Guess we had similar logic as kids.
